Week 1, Question 1

Aristophanes was a guy who hung out with Plato (a very famous Greek philosopher) back in the day. In one of their discussions, Aristophanes described his understanding of love. He believed that originally, human beings were these big, happy blobs. There were 3 kinds of blob: one that was all male, one that was all female, and one that was hermaphrodidic (had male and female components). Zeus (an ancient Greek god) chopped them all in half, and mended them up, so that each being became two separate entities. Everyone was scattered all around the world. Now we say that we are looking for our "other half" to go back to that primal, happy, state. So we can never really be whole until we find that other person.

What do you think of this story?

It's good that they could bring this kind of illusion to readers.

However, what are the chances that I'll be able to find my other half? If I'm not able to recover my half, I can't purely blame Zeus for living my life this way. I have a choice. I'd do whatever it takes to satisfy myself. And even though I may not be completely satisfied, I'd still be happy. It's because I've lived life with what I had; regardless of my loss.

I think that this story is true for some people because some people do find their true soulmates (their other half). But some people never really find their true love so I don't think this story could apply to every person.

Does it truly take a "second half" to live happily. In my experience many people living a single life seem to be much more full than that of a married person. If you were to ever end up finding your "second half," how long would the happiness truly last?

Fatboyninja,

You remind me of my pastor. He always lectures us, saying that you cannot count on a man (or girl) to make you happy. But now i am beginning to see that you guys are so right. One of the best things about loving somebody else is the happiness that you feel. Netherless, to love somebody else, you must first learn to love yourself.

So with the quote, I do agree that findig that "other half" will bring you happiness, but it cannot be the only thing that does.

I think this story is somewhat interesting. The part where Zeus cuts primal entities in half was unreal. wish i could do that too, but then the one-half would be a quarter which is not right.

anyway i wish there really was another half of me out there somewhere so i can become whole again, 'cause honestly i feel empty.

Prehaps theoreticly this is true (everyone has a second half) but i doubt it is ment literaly that we all have a ^^second half^^

Dont give up on finding that right person, but DONT think there is only one other half out there for you, there's always someone.

Yes i believe in that. just like our good side and bad side. Everyone shows their good side when their happy but when they get upset they get mad and show their bad side and this story kinda relates to what we do and have in real life so i totally believe in it.

What I didn't say in the original post is that many people believe that this story is satirical in nature.
In any case, all of us are destined to spend our whole lives thinking about the nature of love. From what I hear, it never gets much easier...
Thanks for all your thoughts and ideas. Comments are now closed.

Others who had experience and are happy because they found someone would find this story very interesting. They would want to believe in it. This also puts people in a situation where they ask themselves if they did find their other half. It takes time to find your one. Some take even longer than others. Just keep searching.
