Web discussion question 1

Do you think the people living in the World State in Brave New World are happy? Why or why not?

Most of the citizens of Brave New World seem pretty content. This is because they are followers of the system. If everybody was discontent and angry, we would be seeing some sort of rebellion or chaos. However, if they are happy, I believe it is only simple happiness. Happy your needs are met everyday, but no freedom to find deeper meaning.

I don't think the people in Brave New World even know what true happyness is. They are being brainwashed and molded into these perfect human beings in a perfect society, which is all fake. They are living a lie rather than facing the reality of human nature and letting the world run how it naturaly should.

I think people living in the world state in Brave New world are not truly happy because they are forced to be happy by a drug. It seems it is not pure happiness from the heart. They also don't have no other emotions other than being happy and it seems very unnatural when they act happy.

People who lives in brave new world, dont know what is happy or sad. They are like machines, all they know how to do is just work and die. It's a society where there is no value, but there main perspective is work to death. The people in that society dont have any feelings, cause they were train to feel empty. All they know how to do is compare right and wrong. They are all physically active, but there mentally dead.

People in Brave New world even do not know what is happy or sad. They don't have any problems and annoys. They are not unhappiness to live in Brave New world, but I don't say they are happy. They don't know what is real happiness.
All they do is work and die. It must be unhappy, misfortune, and unlucky, even though they don't know.

Given food, shelter, jobs, and freedom to sexually express themselves, it would be logical to assume that these citizens are quite happy with their lives. The only reason for them to be unhappy is that they have no choice in who they become, but rather that is pre decided by another human. However, this is seen as normal to them, so I doubt, with the exception of Bernard, that this is distressing anyone.

Even though the citizens in the World State look happy, they are not. In the novel, Henry Foster showed his melancholy side while he was looking down at the chimney of Crematorium. As Henry looked down and sighed, he was curious to know who died. Also, the Director showed an unusual behavior reflecting his previous horrible experience when he travelled with a woman to the Reservation. Due to a storm, his woman was lost and never found. He explained how it still greatly affected him until today. Sometimes he would have a nightmare, searching in the wood alone. In spite a constant and heavy dose on soma, they still have a feeling of emptiness and hollowness left inside them. A drug cannot promote happiness; happiness is a natural joy of everyday experience. The citizens have not yet experienced the happiness because they are controlled by the World State. The World State abolished the true meaning of happiness and manipulated the citizens to fulfill their joy with the wrong direction. To fill this gap, they should regain the lost connection with nature, art, and literature.

I believe that the people in brave new world are happy. However, they did not learn the whole definition of happiness such as true love. This factor was for bidden because can make the perfect eautopian world very unstable. The happiness throughout love can change a person's mood or feeling dramatically.
